James is a partner in the corporate team in Penningtons Manches' London office and leads the digital business group across the firm. He has extensive corporate finance and commercial expertise, having advised on a wide spectrum of transactions in particular domestic and cross-border M&A transactions, corporate restructurings, reorganisations, fundraisings and joint ventures. James has a particular focus on the technology sector (through the firm's digital business group) and has strong links with the tech community, particularly in London and San Francisco. He sits on the Tech London Advocates (TLA) Advisory Board, is an advisor to London’s AR/VR Realities Centre and set up Penningtons Manches’ San Francisco office in 2014 which he visited on a monthly basis for three and a half years.
James also has a strong track record advising on venture capital and private equity transactions having acted for many management teams and PE/VC houses. His recent (and historic) private equity and venture capital clients include 500 Startups, Barclays, Exponent, Gresham, LDC, Montagu Private Equity and Tate & Lyle Ventures.
As a highly regarded corporate finance practitioner, James has been recommended by The Legal 500 as providing 'exactly what an in-house GC needs'. He joined Penningtons Manches in 2011, having previously been a partner with a Silver Circle law firm. Prior to that he spent two years at a US law firm and trained and qualified at a top 10 global law firm.
