Charles O'Brien, Senior Associate at Penningtons Manches

Profile

Charles is a senior associate in our personal injury team. He joined Penningtons Manches in 2015 with over 20 years’ experience of acting for both claimants and defendants. In addition to his work in the UK, he has practised law in the US and across the Caribbean. Since 2009 he has been a qualified attorney in Washington State. 

Specialising in high value and catastrophic personal injury litigation, Charles represents clients who have suffered brain injuries, amputations and spinal cord damage following accidents at work, public liability breaches and serious road traffic accidents. He has a particular interest in cycling and fatal claims and has represented clients at inquests. On the defendant side, Charles has acted for the NHS and for clients in the construction and manufacturing industries on employers’ liability actions, and also advises on public liability and occupiers’ liability claims.

Charles is a member of the Law Society’s Personal Injury Specialist Solicitor Panel.

Recent work highlights

  • Recovering £1.2 million for an above the elbow amputee following a motorcycle accident.
  • Acting for a client with a spinal cord injury following a fall at work and achieving a settlement of over £1 million.
  • Defending a case in the St Vincent courts brought by a UK barrister who suffered a head injury while on a catamaran in the Caribbean.
  • Representing a client who was brain injured when the forks on his bicycle collapsed after it was serviced.
  • Obtaining over £100,000 for a baggage handler who hurt his back at Heathrow after his union solicitors had turned his case down.
