Profile

Joanne is a commercial lawyer, specialising in technology transactions and data protection. Her work encompasses structuring and negotiating contracts for complex technology projects, IT agreements, intellectual property and technology licensing, e-commerce and consumer law issues. Joanne has particular expertise in the electric vehicle sector, where she has been assisting a client on its contracts with key partners in relation to electric vehicle charge point infrastructure, as well as on consumer law issues. As an expert in data protection laws, she is advising numerous clients on data protection compliance in readiness for the forthcoming General Data Protection Regulation. She also has expertise in brand protection, and she and her team manage intellectual property portfolios on behalf of a wide range of clients.

Joanne is recommended by independent legal directories Chambers Guide to the UK Legal Profession and The Legal 500 for her commercial, information technology and intellectual property work.  She has been described in these directories as 'smart, approachable, responsive and easy to work with', 'an excellent negotiator' and 'professional, pragmatic and knowledgeable'.

Joanne is the co-chair of the intellectual property andtechnology specialist group of leading international law firm network Multilaw. She is also the chancellor of the Multilaw Academy, and vice-chair of the Data Protection Committee for global technology law association iTechLaw. She is a contributing author to the UK chapter (privacy section) of Media, Advertising and Entertainment Laws Throughout the World.

Recent work highlights

  • Negotiating, on behalf of an Indian company operating in the defence technology sector, a contract for the manufacture and supply of components and for the licence of technology.
  • Drafting template contracts for the supply of IT and telecoms services, including provision of cloud (SaaS and IaaS) and managed services, connectivity and data services.
  • Advising a US provider of big data analytics services on data anonymisation and handling under the EU data protection regime and on customer contracts and international data transfers.
  • Providing guidance to a well-known food products supplier on clearance searches for new brands.
  • Representing a manufacturer of specialist polymers for use in the opthalmic industry on a joint venture with a Dutch company, including drafting and negotiating associated technology licence and supply agreements.
