Profile

Matthew is a partner, and global head of the corporate team. He has been ranked in tier 1 for 'M&A: smaller deals up to £50 million' in The Legal 500 for the last ten years. Highly recommended by clients and peers who have contributed to the directory, he stands out for his 'invaluable input and advice'.

He provides cross border corporate and finance expertise to a wide range of quoted and unquoted mid cap companies. In addition to acquisitions and disposals, AIM listings and fund raising, Matthew advises on acquisition finance, restructuring and refinancing work, acting for both clients and lenders. He has developed expertise in accelerated sale processes and also specialises in asset realisation in the fields of corporate recovery and insolvency.

Matthew is co-head of the firm's fashion, luxury and lifestyle sector group with a number of well-known brands in his client portfolio. Through the fashion, luxury and lifestyle sector, he is able to make a valuable contribution to the firm's digital technology expertise, particularly where it overlaps with the retail world. He is also a core member of the firm’s North American group, reflective of his cross border practice.

Having joined the firm as a trainee, Matthew went on to become a partner in 1999. During his career he has spent several months seconded to the US international transactions department of US law firm Pillsbury Winthrop.

Recent work highlights

  • Acting for All Saints Retail on its £107 million re-financing by Lion Capital enabling the buy out of Kaupthing and Glitnir banks for £22.5 million and a new share structure.
  • Advising the shareholders of Oscar Mayer, the UK’s leading ready meal manufacturer, on its sale to a new vehicle set up by German private equity fund Deutsche Beteiligungs AG.
  • Acting for the shareholders of OTAS Technologies, an equity analytics platform, on the sale of the company to global institutional trading network Liquidnet.
  • Leading the multi-disciplinary team which acted for the founding shareholders of Kelerbay on its sale to a private equity company with an annual turnover of £140 million.
  • Advising Oxford Cannabinoid Technologies Holdings Plc on its restructuring, fund raising and main market listing.
  • Advising on the acquisition of the business and assets of Tough Mudder UK to US based Spartan.
