Matthew is a partner in our corporate and finance teams and has been ranked in Tier 1 for 'M&A: smaller deals up to £50 million' in The Legal 500 for the last five years. He has been highly recommended and stands out for his 'invaluable input and advice'.

He provides corporate finance advice to a wide range of quoted and unquoted mid cap companies. In addition to expertise in acquisitions and disposals, AIM listings and fund raising, he also advises on acquisition finance, restructuring and refinancing work, acting for both clients and lenders. Matthew also specialises in asset realisation in the fields of corporate recovery and insolvency.

Matthew graduated from University College London and joined the firm as a trainee in 1990. He became a partner in January 1999. He spent several months seconded to the US International Transactions Department of US law firm Pillsbury Winthrop.

Recent work highlights

  • Acting for fashion retailer, All Saints Retail Limited on its £107 million re-financing by Lion Capital (enabling the buy out of Kaupthing and Glitnir banks for £22.5 million and a new share structure).
  • Advising the management on the buy out of Winning Moves International, the developer, distributor and seller of games and playing cards including Top Trumps and Waddingtons No 1, from the Kremer family and Hasbro SA.
  • Acting for AIM listed company Brightside Group Plc on the acquisition of market leading company, E-Systems and eDevelopment, for £17 million.
  • Advising Brightside on its admission to AIM and a subsequent reverse takeover of Group Direct.
  • Acting for Lloyds Bank Commercial Finance on an LMA document-based committed facility of £26 million to Laidlaw Interiors Group Limited with private equity provided by Rutland.
