A new initiative comes into force today aimed at enabling businesses to attract the best global talent to the UK. Developed and operated by GTI Recruiting Solutions, on advice from Penningtons Solicitors LLP's immigration team, the scheme is backed by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills and regulated by the UK Border Agency.
Changes to the rules governing migration to the UK in 2009 left many organisations unable to continue the practice of bringing non-EEA nationals to the UK for internships and work placements. As a result of the new scheme, which operates under the tier 5 government authorised exchange, employers based in England are again able to employ talented undergraduates or graduates from around the world.
The key criteria are:
- the role must be supernumerary and at least NVQ 3
- interns must be paid a salary equivalent to or above NMW
- they may come for a maximum stay of 12 months.
While offering flexibility to employers, the scheme requires them to work with GTI Recruiting Solutions as the overarching sponsor to ensure that the employment of interns falls within the positive spirit of the scheme. Further information and application forms can be accessed at www.tier5intern.com>>
Penningtons will be holding a training session at its City office on 26 April 2010 during which GTI Recruiting Solutions will present the tier 5 intern scheme to attendees. Please look at our events page>> for further details.
