Catherine McCann, a trainee solicitor at Penningtons Solicitors LLP's City office, has been invited to contribute to a new guide published by the London Chamber of Commerce & Industry to help young people consider the many types of jobs available in the capital.

The guide, Capital Careers: A Jobs Guide for Young Londoners, will be launched on 3 July and has the support of Mayor Boris Johnson. It will be distributed to young people across the capital and features 11 young Londoners starting out in a variety of professions. Catherine was asked to be the contributor to the chapter on the legal industry, highlighting the challenges and rewards of becoming a solicitor. She emphasises particularly the many opportunities for direct client contact and has tried to dispel some of the myths surrounding legal firms by describing how it is possible to achieve a successful career in law and maintain a good work life balance.

Commenting on the publication, Catherine said: "I think it is important that young people make informed decisions about their careers. This guide will encourage some to think seriously about careers in the City, especially in the current climate when they may be considering alternative career paths. I hope my contribution to the publication will give an insight into what a career in law is really like and provide some helpful information about how to qualify as a solicitor."

Boris Johnson has authored a foreword for the guide which will run alongside an introduction by Rebecca Efue, a young Londoner who helped write the publication.

The launch event for the guide - which will be held at the London Chamber of Commerce & Industry's headquarters - will be attended both by students involved in the Young Chamber programme as well as businesses and representatives from the Greater London Assembly and the young professionals featured in the guide.
