Potentially overzealous laser treatment for narrow angles

We are advising on a case relating to the standard of ophthalmic treatment our client received during an iridotomy, performed to correct ‘narrow angles’, which left her vulnerable to developing glaucoma and possible eyesight loss.

Our client was assured that the procedure would be very straightforward and would not last very long. However, during the treatment, which involves having holes blasted into each iris, the surgeon needed to use the laser far more than the usual four or five times and her eyes began to bleed significantly. She had a huge amount of debris in both eyes and the procedure had to be aborted.

Our client has been left with significant pain, reduced vision and problems with sensitivity to light as a result of the large holes in her eyes. We are now currently investigating whether the ophthalmic surgeon’s believed overzealous use of the laser was negligent and whether this caused our client’s subsequent problems.
