Complications from abdominal surgery leading to loss of eyesight

We have dealt with a case where abdominal surgery led to complications that ultimately cost our client her eyesight. The surgery regrettably resulted in perforation of her jejunum and she spent a month in an intensive care unit.

During that time she suffered an encephalopathy, possibly as a result of the medication that she was given to induce sedation. She experienced a bilateral hypertensive retinopathy probably due to that complication and tragically lost most of her eyesight.

Our client underwent laser treatment to slow the onset of blindness but there was nothing that could be done to reverse the damage.
