Penningtons expands private client and India teams

Penningtons Solicitors LLP is pleased to announce the recruitment of three senior lawyers to its City office. Clare Archer joins the private client team as a partner while Saionton Basu has been appointed joint head of the firm's India group, with Rustam Dubash. Also joining the India team is corporate and commercial consultant Teja Picton-Howell.

Clare Archer specialises in tax planning, the administration of complex and large estates, and a wide range of asset protection and equity work. She joins from Rooks Rider where she had been a partner for the last eight years and has a great deal of experience with onshore and increasingly offshore private clients. Clare is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and chairs the editorial board for the England and Wales and UK entries for the International Yearbook. She also writes the probate section. She was a panel deputy of the Office of the Public Guardian for many years and is also a member of the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists.

Penningtons' firmwide private client team is recognised as a market leader by both Chambers Guide to the UK Legal Profession and The Legal 500. Private Client Practitioner magazine has named it as one of the top 25 law firms.

Saionton Basu is an experienced mergers, acquisitions and projects lawyer, who joins from Platinum Partners in New Delhi. He was previously an associate with White and Case in London. His particular areas of specialisation are structuring and executing domestic and cross-border transactions as well as projects focusing on Public Private Partnerships (PPP). He advises international clients who are active or seek to be active in India, including banks, corporations and financial institutions as well as Indian companies doing business in the UK. His recent transactions include projects for the Pearson Group, Hyatt Hotels Corporation and IL&FS. He featured in the up and coming Indian lawyers under 35 list in the India Report 2010 of a leading industry publication.

Teja Picton-Howell has over 25 years' experience as a corporate finance and commercial lawyer. He was an associate with Nabarro Nathanson before establishing his own practice, Picton Howell, which he merged with EMW Law in 2008 to form EMW Picton Howell LLP. He advises a broad range of clients in India, Europe, the Gulf and the UK, including businesses in the financial services, pharma and life sciences, IT and telecoms sectors. His recent transactions include projects for Inventages life sciences capital fund, the Essar Group (India) and CRISIL (The Credit Rating Agency of India). He carries out an increasing amount of inward investment work for overseas companies entering the UK. Teja is a non executive director of the Reggae Reggae Group of companies (of Dragons' Den fame). He is also a member of the London Chamber of Commerce's Asian Business Association and of the Royal Commonwealth Society. He is a trustee of the India based international charity CRY (Child Rights and You).

Penningtons' India group provides commercial, corporate, dispute resolution, commercial property and tax planning advice to a broad range of Indian clients in the UK and also has strong links with businesses in India. It was established in 1992 by Penningtons partner Rustam Dubash. Clients include the Tata Group, Syndicate Bank, Mahindra and Mahindra, Shree Cement and Nihilent Technologies. The firm is a member of the UK India Business Council and of the Asian Business Group at the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
